Cyber Security Risk Assessment Tools for MSPs, Compared by What They Conclude
Choose the conclusion you need before choosing the tool. Cyber security risk assessment tools support different decisions: prioritizing configuration gaps, testing vulnerabilities, collecting attestations or preparing a prospect conversation.

EVIDENCE · INSIGHT · PROOF
A score is not the work plan.
Context
A number needs a documented calculation, scope and date.
Finding
Read the condition and its supporting source.
Action
Agree an owner, effort, prerequisites and verification.
EVIDENCE · INSIGHT · PROOF
Every finding comes with what it means, what to do and how to verify it.
Find
Keep the dated observation and source.
Explain
Separate the finding from its possible consequence.
Plan
Assign an owner, prerequisites and estimated effort.
Price
Your hourly rate in Settings × LOE in hours.
Verify
Reassess against the baseline; record what changed.
EVIDENCE · INSIGHT · PROOF
Price the agreed work using your own Settings.
Workspace
List price: $279/month; current terms are on Pricing.
Effort
Use the reviewed LOE in hours, including uncertainty and dependencies.
Your rate
The MSP’s configured hourly rate—not a fixed sample rate.
Estimate
Hourly rate × LOE. An effort range gives a price range at that rate.

Short answer
Choose the conclusion you need before choosing the tool. Cyber security risk assessment tools support different decisions: prioritizing configuration gaps, testing vulnerabilities, collecting attestations or preparing a prospect conversation.
Five categories, five different jobs
Questionnaire and GRC tools organize attestations and evidence. Vulnerability scanners evaluate supported assets for technical exposures. Outside-in ratings summarize observable external signals. Microsoft 365 posture tools inspect supported tenant configuration. Prospect-assessment workflows help an MSP prepare the next conversation.
These categories overlap, but none makes every other category redundant. Evaluate the source, access model, output and operational owner. A network collector and a public-record review should not be described as equivalent coverage.
Ask what happens after the issue list
A useful result explains priority, supporting evidence, boundaries and the next accountable action. Ask for a worked example from finding to guidance, a costed scope estimate and a verification check.
SCOUTz organizes worst-first priorities, possible attack-path context, an insurer-question tally and phased tasks. That does not mean the assessment predicts a breach or decides the client’s commercial priorities without human review.
Match the tool to the sales and delivery stage
Before permission, use only the permitted evidence scope and disclose what cannot be established. After customer approval, supported internal configuration can answer different questions. During delivery, the MSP’s operational tools perform the agreed work.
Network Detective Pro is relevant when collector-based network, endpoint and cloud assessment is needed. ConnectSecure is relevant for vulnerability and compliance management. SCOUTz is relevant for evidence-led sales preparation and a bounded handoff. Confirm current scope with each vendor rather than declare a universal winner.
Require dates, baselines and unknown states
A fresh PDF is not necessarily fresh evidence. Ask whether a result retains its original observation date, source, check identity and coverage. A comparable rescan should distinguish changed configuration from reduced visibility.
A finding disappearing is not enough to prove resolution. Review permissions, collection success and affected objects. Keep historical reports accessible so the explanation of a decision survives a later refresh.
Use AI for explanation, not invented proof
Deterministic checks decide findings, AI writes explanations and a human signs off. Evaluate whether a generated explanation can be traced to a source and whether uncertainty survives the rewrite.
Do not accept claims that a tool predicts a breach, proves an attack from permissions alone or turns missing evidence into a pass. Compare supported behavior in an authorized test rather than rely on self-awarded rankings.
Keep the earlier evidence-scope comparison
Microsoft Secure Score supports examining underlying recommendations for supported services; it is not an absolute measure of breach likelihood. Wazuh Security Configuration Assessment evaluates monitored endpoints against policy rules, including applicable file, registry and process checks. SecurityScorecard documents an external perspective using active, passive and enrichment sources; attribution and finding age need review.
For example, an application permission grant is an observed condition. Its possible consequence is that access may warrant review against the app’s business purpose. Ask “Who owns this application, and are these permissions still necessary?” Do not infer data theft, inappropriate access or complete AI readiness from the grant. This preserves the useful worked example and comparison distinctions from the October 7 edition.

The evidence behind the decision
35 public sources for a domain scan; 92 sources with read-only Microsoft 365 consent. Every report counts its checks and shows anything it couldn't read as unread, never as clean.
Microsoft 365 reviews require customer approval and read-only access. SCOUTz does not read mail, files, chats, documents or prompts, install an agent, or make changes.
In one example scan, the domain review read 17 checks; in one Microsoft 365 example, it read 174. Those are example results, not fixed coverage promises. Availability, permissions and source readability affect each run.
Deterministic checks decide findings, AI writes explanations and a human signs off. The MSP approves changes, performs delivery and determines whether the verification evidence is sufficient.
Frequently asked questions
Which tools prioritize domain and Microsoft 365 findings for MSPs?
Compare supported coverage and the deliverable you need. SCOUTz connects public-domain and customer-approved Microsoft 365 evidence to priorities, scoped planning and verification; other tools may better suit vulnerability operations or compliance workflows.
What can I run before a sales meeting?
Only the assessment scope you are authorized to use. Public evidence can prepare bounded questions; it cannot establish internal tenant controls or grant access.
What makes proof of change credible?
Comparable source coverage, dates, affected objects and check identities matter. Retain the baseline and distinguish a resolved finding from a source that became unreadable.
What does the AI actually do?
It assists explanation and preparation around supported evidence. It does not replace deterministic checks, customer context, authorization or human approval.
Is a risk assessment a penetration test?
No. Configuration review, public-record research and exploitation testing are different activities. Choose separately authorized specialist testing where that is the requirement.
